Coffee plants are prima donnas: they only like temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees and rainfall of 40 to 60 inches a year. Thanks to warmer temperatures and deforestation in many countries that grow the plants, a few major players have stepped in to prevent coffee catastrophe.
Starbucks has invested $15 million thus far to help expand the Conservation Coffee program in Central and South America. McDonald’s has invested $6 million to train coffee farmers and purchases 25 percent of its global supply from sustainable sources certified by Rainforest Alliance. J.M. Smucker Company (parent of Dunkin’ Donuts, Folgers and Millstone) has pledged to use certified sustainable coffee in 10 percent of its retail supply by 2016. Keurig Green Mountain has pledged $22 million to fund farmers, and purchases more than 26 percent of its supply from fair trade certified farms.
